I can't remember what it feels like to be human anymore. I don't remember how it feels to be normal. I know that I crave it more than I crave life, or breath in my lungs...possibly more than blood, and that is saying a lot. I used to remember...but it's been too long. I haven't lost my memories...no...I still remember what happened that night. I don't think I'll ever forget.
Dante was the most handsome man I had ever met. His kisses burned like fire even though his skin was cold. I didn't know what he was, but I did know he was not human. I never asked...he never offered an explanation. I didn't need one, and he didn't want to tell. I just knew that we were in love. He was the only man I ever wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
One night, as I lay awake, waiting for him to come through my window as he did on so many other nights, I heard the unmistakable sound of shattering glass. Screams. Maniacal laughter. I didn't wait a second longer. I threw back the covers and slammed through the door, rushing to the top of the staircase. Looking down, I saw a sight that turned the blood in my veins to ice. There were men in my home...with swords and knives. My mother and father lay on the floor in pools of their own blood.
"That's her...that's the one!" One of them shouted as they finally saw that I was there. I couldn't move. I was frozen by the fear that rooted my feet to the floor. My parents were dead. I knew, without having to look, that my brother was dead too. I knew that I was next.
It didn't take them long to reach me. They moved so fast that they were just a blur. I tried to fight...tried to scream, but they cut me before I could make a sound. They left me for dead, on the first step of the staircase, where my blood slowly began to drip, forever staining the dark wood a dirty brown. I wonder if they replaced the stairs or just painted over them?
A few minutes after they left, my beloved Dante arrived. He screamed in frustration and pain when he knelt to my side, but then he realized I wasn't dead. "I'm sorry, my love...this will hurt terribly." He took my hand in his as I looked into his beautiful eyes. What was he talking about? He lifted my wrist to his cold pale lips in what I thought was to be a kiss, but he bit me instead. It broke the skin, and hurt like nothing I had ever felt before. I didn't understand...and I couldn't move, couldn't speak. "I won't be seeing you again, dear Bane." He said.
He told the truth...he never saw me again. That was a time when I called myself Bane...now I can't bear to. He turned me into a new creature that night...I changed my name as well. It was a dirty thing to leave me to discover what was wrong with me on my own...but I did...and I am far stronger than he was. He was weak enough to fall in love. I am strong enough to resist. I learned from my mistake...I will never love again.
